Kings Mountain Historical Museum will host a 75th Anniversary Celebration of the opening of the Kings Mountain Post Office building at 100 East Mountain St. in Kings Mountain, NC on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at 5:30 pm.
Currently owned by the City of Kings Mountain and home to Kings Mountain Historical Museum, the Kings Mountain Post Office building has just been entered into the National Register of Historic Places, the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. The Post Office is significant as one of the many necessary buildings built throughout the nation under the Federal Works Agency, as part of the New Deal public works programs which were created by the FDR Administration in response to the Great Depression.
The July 1 event will include an official presentation of the Certificate of Entry in the National Register of Historic Places, and a tour of the building led by the architecture and landscape historian who prepared the nomination, Mr. Davyd Foard Hood. Kings Mountain Historical Museum is also working with the City of Kings Mountain to return the original Post Office mural, an exceptional example of New Deal artwork and a source of pride for the community, to its original location in the Post Office lobby. The Museum plans to present the returned mural at the 75th Anniversary event. Admission is FREE!Cost: FREE
