Radium Halos is an historical fiction based on the true events of the Radium Dial Painters, a group of female factory workers who, in the early 1920s, contracted radiation poisoning from painting glow-in-the-dark watch and clock dials with radium paint.  The story begins in Belmont, NC in 1923, where two sisters convince their father to let them travel to Illinois to take jobs with the well-paying Radium Dial Company.  The book’s narrator is one of the sisters, now 65 years old and suffering from mental illness.  She tells her story through flashbacks, slowly revealing her past, the loved ones she’s lost, and the dangerous secrets she’s kept all these years.  The author will explain how the narrative goes beyond the Radium Dial case and reflects much about our cultural attitudes toward work, women, mental illness, and aging.

This program is part of Kings Mountain Historical Museum’s Lecture Series focusing on local women’s history, in conjunction with the “Pioneering Women of Cleveland County” exhibit (on display February 7 – May 23, 2015).
